Strong Password Policy in Bigtime

Some firms prefer a strong password for security reasons: it’s a way to protect your company’s information. Strong passwords are often a combination of characters, including letters and numbers, of a specific length.

Strong passwords are turned on by default for new firms. So when your firm is created, the strong password feature will be enabled. However, if you’re a new firm that doesn’t want a strong password, then you can turn it off. 

This article will explain:

  • What constitutes a strong password in BigTime,
  • How to enable a strong password policy, and
  • Who’s affected by the policy.

What’s a Strong Password in Bigtime?

Strong password requirements vary among companies. For BigTime, a strong password:

  • Is at least eight characters long.
  • Contains two of the following character types: letters, digits, and non-alphanumeric characters, such as a dollar sign or an exclamation point.
  • Doesn’t involve the user’s username or the word “password.”

If a strong password is a feature you’d like to activate or deactivate, system administrators can follow the steps in the next section to set it up.


Enable a Strong Password Policy

System administrators can follow these steps:

1. Click MY COMPANY, from the navigation bar, and select MY COMPANY from the picklist. You’ll default into the COMPANY INFO tab, which is where you want to be.

2. Check the box ENABLE STRONG PASSWORD POLICY to activate this feature or uncheck the box to deactivate it.

3. Click SAVE to save your selection.

Who’s Affected by a Strong Password Policy?

Two groups will be affected by the strong password policy:

  1. New users added to your BigTime account. Any new users invited to BigTime after the strong password policy is enabled will be prompted to create a strong password.
  2. Current users that have their password reset. BigTime doesn’t require current BigTime employees to make a strong password after the strong password policy is enabled. But if a current user resets their password or the system administrator resets the user’s password, then the user will be instructed to create a strong password.

There are two ways a current user’s password can be reset:

  • The user can access the reset password option within their profile setting. Click here to learn how.
  • The system administrators can reset the user’s password. Click here to learn how.

In both instances, BigTime will prompt the user to create a strong password.


TIP: A Firm Owner of Multiple Companies Can Designate Which Companies Require a Strong Password.

For example, John Doe owns three firms that use BigTime Software: a law firm, an accounting firm, and an ice cream shop. John can set a strong password for the law and accounting firms, which means the users of these firms will need to have a strong password. John can decide not to have a strong password for the ice cream shop, which means the users won’t need to use a strong password.
