A project code is a unique way to identify a project. It’s a mandatory field, but customizable, when creating new projects.
In this article, we’ll explain how to access and use the project code feature. We'll answer some frequently asked questions at the end.
Note: If your firm uses clients instead of projects, you’ll add a “client code” when you add a new client. Client and project codes function similarly. We’ll use "project codes" for this article, but the same features are available for client codes.
Accessing Project Codes
To access your project codes, click MY COMPANY, on your navigation bar, and then select PROJECT LIST. Doing so will bring you to your list of projects. Then, click ADD NEW PROJECT near the top-left of your screen. A new window will pop up, where you can add information about your new project and add a project code. Your screen will look something like this:
Using Project Codes
You’ve got a couple of options with your project code:
Use the automatic project code option by clicking the EDIT AUTO-NUMBERING hyperlink above the “project code” field. (This field is blank when you first start using BigTime.) You need to setup the auto-numbering format in order to populate the date, as in the example above: “05-15-2017.”
Once you click on the hyperlink, a new window will populate and you’ll be able to type into the text box under “Format.”
MM-DD-YYYY (month-day-year) is a commonly used format. But there are other options, too. Hover over the “i” icon next to “Format” to learn about the various combinations you can use with autonumbering. After you type your desired combination, click SAVE.
Once you create an automatic project code, the format will automatically be applied to new projects you create.
Click ADD to add the new project and code to your project dashboard.
Override the automatic project code you created. Or if you didn’t create an automatic project code you can create a custom project code for each new project.
Create your own code by typing directly into the text field under PROJECT CODE. In the example below, we typed the letters “TECH” to reference our project, “Technical Services.”
Be sure to click SAVE CHANGES near the bottom-right of the project window.
